How to Write a Good Cover Letter for The Nursing Job Application

Did you know that about 45 percent of people looking for jobs send their resumes with cover letters? Interestingly, most employers prefer that you send a cover letter with your resume. However, several nurses spend so much time working on their resumes that they fail to craft worthwhile cover letters or don’t write them at all.

As you plan to apply for that new nursing job, we advise that you prepare a great cover letter and add it to your application. Doing this increases your chances of getting hired.

Crafting a Good Cover Letter for your Nursing Job Application

A cover letter makes you stand out from the crowd of applicants that send in their applications. This document allows you to expand on the qualifications you added to your resume while expressing your interest in the position. The steps below will guide you in writing a good cover letter for your nursing job application:

Name and contact info

You should begin your cover letter with your name and address. There isn’t a hard-and-fast rule for doing this, so you can do it in several ways. Here are some examples below:

Example 1

Name

Address

Phone number

Email

Example 2

Write the date

Once you are done writing your name and contact info, your next action is to include a date. Make sure that the date is that of the day you will be sending out the cover letter. The date should be one line after your address line and one line above the name and address of the recipient.

Name and address of the recipient

The next thing to do is to add the name of the recipient and their contact information to your letter. You can check the job post or company website if you aren’t sure of these details.

Salutation

You are now ready to begin the body of your cover letter. Start the letter with the traditional salutation or professional greeting. Choose any of “Hello” or “Dear” to be on the safe side. Add the name of the recipient to personalize the letter or stick to “sir” or “ma,” depending on the occasion.

Opening paragraph

There is no need for unnecessary felicitations as this is a formal letter. Instead, include the position title and follow it up with your reason for applying. Make sure that you show your enthusiasm for this position as much as possible without trying to patronize the recipient.

A paragraph showing your nursing industry background

Every employer wants to know how much experience you have in the industry. You can give them an idea by providing a paragraph to show your nursing industry background. Here, you add relevant qualifications to the role and previous achievements. The aim is to make you stand out from the other candidates, so don’t sell yourself short.

A paragraph showing your key qualifications

This paragraph should help you sell yourself further. Provide anecdotes showcasing your qualifications relevant to this role. Again, this paragraph aims to show that you are qualified for the position in question.

Conclusion

Your ending paragraph should show why you are the perfect fit for the opening. Use a line or two to express your enthusiasm once more and provide a call to action. Let them know that you are open to further discussion regarding the position.

Professional sign-off

End the cover letter with a professional sign-off like “Sincerely” and your full name.

Conclusion
