What to Expect When You Choose Nursing as a Career

1. Opportunity to Advance Your Career

To continually grow in your nursing career, you will need to keep advancing academically. You can decide to earn your BSN, become a registered nurse, or even prepare for management and leadership roles with an MSN. If you already have an MSN, you can continue with post-Masters certificates to be eligible for certification in other specialties. To expand your scope of practice and advance your career, enrolling in a PMC program will help a lot.

2. Nursing School Can be Challenging but Still Achievable

Nursing degrees can be challenging, be it a diploma program or BSN. You will encounter lots of challenges that may want to discourage you. However, you must make up your mind to overcome these challenges. You have good instructors and advisors who provide sufficient support to help you to succeed.

To succeed in nursing, you must always learn to stay organized and know how to manage your time wisely. Some nursing students do balance their part-time or full-time jobs in addition to earning their nursing degrees. With online learning and flexible course schedules, one with a busy life can find time for school and be able to engage in other activities.

3. Strong Time Management and Communication Skills are Necessary

Communication and time management skills are important to you as a nursing student and even more important when you start working full-time. To be a great nurse, you must be organized, learn to show attention to detail, and quickly adapt to new situations. Good nurses are active listeners and understand that people have different sets of values and life experiences to draw upon. When working with patients, they try to see the situation from the patient’s perspective to best meet their needs.

4. Nursing is a Rewarding Field and Where You can Make a Difference

Nurses play an important role in defining the future of healthcare. As a nurse, you also have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people you serve. People will remember you for the rest of their life for helping them.

A nursing instructor at Herzing’s Orlando campus, by name Anna Armstrong once said working with patients also made an impact on her life.

My patients embrace every second they have. The challenges of life do not bother them, and the significant things in life keep increasing significantly,” she says. “They had the opportunity of sharing these life lessons with me and for that reason, I am humbled and grateful to be a part of their healthcare.”

5. You will gain experience in a variety of nursing specialties

Nurses have the privilege of working in different specialties and environments. There are endless possibilities in nursing even though it may seem overwhelming at times. With perseverance, you will find the specialty that is suitable for you.

Zahra Mohammed a nursing student once said “Eight years ago, if you had asked me which of the nursing specialty I was interested in, I wouldn't have known what to answer. Choosing a specialty involves a lot of patience, focus and trial and error.”

Conclusion

Nursing is not just like any other career where anything goes. It is a career that needs lots of patience, carefulness, diligence, and more. You must expect a lot when considering going into this line of work and be fully prepared physically, mentally and otherwise to succeed.
